Thambili House, Galle Fort [Sri Lanka]

 

Thambili House is a 300 years old villa recently restored by Rohan Aluwihara, a protégé of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, into a boutique hotel. Set right next to the Fort Rampart, a few yards from the famous Galle Fort Light House, this two-storied, spice merchant’s house is today a haven of comfort, privacy and refinement for discriminating visitors. Overlooking the picturesque southern Indian Ocean, the house is designed with uneven walls and cut cement flooring. Interiors are tastefully decorated with 16th, 17th and 18th Century genuine antique ebony and calamander furniture and contemporary local art. The House is a base from which to explore Sri Lanka’s south coast and interior.


Accommodation

Thambili House has 2 double bedrooms and 1 family bedroom all located on the upper floor. Bedrooms are well furnished with genuine antique ebony king sized four-poster beds & air-conditioning. The Master Bedroom opens to a Terrace with sea views. And the family room opens to a Terrace with Pool and Lighthouse views. All have ensuite bathrooms.

Thambili House has a dedicated Butler to look into Guest's comfort.

The villa facilities include a flat screen TV with satellite channels, DVD library, iPod music, books and board games. Complimentary Mobile Phone for use during the stay.


Dining

The house has a dining rooms located on the ground floor opening on to an inner courtyard with a Romanesque swimming pool. There is a fully equipped kitchen and cook dedicated to preparing the guest’s local and western favorites.


EXPERIENCES

The Thambili House has various recreational facilities for the guests. The experiences offered by the hotel are:

Excursion to the historic city of Galle.

Excursion to Mirissa for a whale and dolphin waching trip.

Visit to Ambalangoda Ariyapala Mask Museum, an established mask craft center and sales outlet for wooden masks worn during ritual folk dances and operas.

Guided inland bike or walking tours through bird sanctuaries and plantations.

Hot Air Ballooning trips at Galle. Ballooning trips are offered daily throughout the season from November to April when the winds are light and the sky is bluest. Each trip lasts approximately 2.5 – 3 hours.

Boat trip on Koggala Lake visiting Talathuduwa Temple Island, followed by a Spice Garden and a bird sanctuary.

Arrange a visit to the nearby turtle hatchery.

Visit to moonstone mine at Meetiyagoda. Meetiyagoda, located between Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa is famous for its precious gems and moonstones. The guests can see or even go down into the deep, narrow shafts from which the stones are mined. The small visitor centre provides information related to this stone while the large shop on the premises sells moonstones as well as other stones.
