Taylor’s Hill, Kandy [Sri Lanka]

 

Located in Deltota, 30km south of Kandy, Taylor’s Hill is an old planter’s mansion converted into a luxury boutique hotel. It attributes its name to James Taylor who introduced commercial tea production into Ceylon, operating at neighbouring Loolecondera estate. The elegantly refurbished hotel was built by British tea planter Dominic Elwes over a century ago and mirrors an English country manor in its décor and architecture. Set in acres of beautifully landscaped garden, offering stunning views of the hills surrounding Nuwara Eliya, the hotel is sumptuous and stylish and combines comfort and originality with warmth and a old world charm.


Accommodation

The Taylor’s Hill features 5 bedrooms and suites, with big comfy beds, bathtubs, old fireplaces and bright yet tasteful décor. There are also rooms available for families with connecting living rooms where extra beds can be added, as well as queen and twin bed options are also available.

Each of the five rooms takes its name from Sri Lanka’s tea-planting history and is styled in an individual design and colourful style, and comes with en-suite bathrooms. There are no TVs or phone in the rooms but there is a TV room with a collection of DVDs for all guests to enjoy.

The rooms can be categorized as:

Pattiyagama: A very spacious double room, with views over the gardens and countryside beyond. The room has a king-sized artistic double-bed with additional connecting room which if required can accommodate two extra beds for families. The room also has comfortable seating space, open fireplace and luxurious bathroom with a bathtub, drench shower and double basins.

Loolecondera: A very spacious double room, with views over the gardens and countryside beyond. The room has a king-sized double-bed with a sitting area which can become an additional space to accommodate two extra beds for families. The room also has a comfortable seating space and luxurious bathroom with a drench shower and basin.

Taylor: A very spacious twin room, offering views over the gardens and countryside beyond. The room has two separate queen-sized beds, comfortable seating space and Luxurious bathroom with a drench shower and basin.

Le Cocq: A standard room with comfortable seating space and a luxurious bathroom with a drench shower and basin. Very comfortable bedroom with overtones of french style featuring a kingsized double-bed.

Lipton: a standard room, with en-suite basin and shower. Very comfortable bedroom in floral decor. King-sized double-bed.Comfortable seating space, and individual furniture and furnishings.


Dining

Taylor’s Hill has a beautiful dining room with dark wood furniture, damask wallpaper and tapestry-covered chairs. The cuisine offered here is Asian fresh fusion fare with emphasis on traditional Srilankan food. A hint of India can be experienced as the chef introduces more Tamil fare and Western dishes also features in the menu. A favorite among the guests is the afternoon tea which is served in the sun room or in the gardens with home-baked cakes and biscuits with a perfect cup of local tea. Dietary requirements for all meals are respected when informed before. In room dining is not available.


Experiences

There is plenty to keep guests entertained during their stay.

Cycling or Walking: There are countless long and short trails to choose from to explore and revel in the lush and open spaces, where nature abounds. Bicycles are available free of charge. The guests can embark on an adventure cycling the mountain trails of the estate or trekking in the nearby Kondagala range.

Bird Life: Enjoy the sights of a wide variety of Bird Life around the gardens.

Sports: Guests can enjoy a game of tennis at the private tennis court, play a game of Badminton and Croquet on its own lawns or perhaps a game on 150 year old restored billiards table with the original billiard balls and cues.

Tea Plantation tour: Right next door is the working tea estate of Loolecondera where James Taylor first cultivated tea in what was then known as Ceylon. Take a tour and learn how tea is grown, picked, dried and packed for export around the world. Tours can be taken independently or with a local driver and English speaking guide.

Excursions: Below stated excurions can be organised.

  • Trip to Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains National Park and Pinnawala Elephant Orphange can be arranged on request.
  • Hindu Temple - a temple is situated in the nearby village where guests can witness the colourful statues of the Hindu Gods and take a peek at the colourful traditional ceremonies which the local villagers take part in.
